Amarres – Zaitunay Bay Review

Amarres is the newest addition to The Alleyway Group, they guys behind awesome places like Couqley and The Angry Monkey. It’s located in Beirut’s hottest new area: Zaitunay Bay. Everyone has been to ZB, everyone has photos posing on the boardwalk or taking in the sun on the grass. That’s where Amarres has set up shop, in one of the biggest lots in the seaside project.

Amarres’ menu is french gourmet cuisine, with a special emphasis on seafood, given its location. Their indoor area is warm and cozy with brass finishings and intricate, hand-made floor tiles. One of the walls houses hundreds of bottle of fine wine stacked above each other like they would be in a vineyard’s cellars.

The food is divine and their steak and gratin is exactly the way I like it: brown on the outside and a beautiful pink on the inside with just the right amount of juiciness. However, my favorite dish at Amarres is the salmon tartine, which is a very light, delicious and fair-priced meal. The cream cheese and herb mix on whole-wheat bread with smoked salmon is perfect with a glass of rose while you’re wearing your sunglasses and gazing at the tops of yachts only meters away.

What I love most about it though, is that it’s similar to Couqley in that the food is amazing but the price is fair. Some other restaurants close by offer similar menus, but charge almost 5 times as much! So, be careful when you’re in ZB and scan the outdoor menus before getting a table, for several of my friends paid a lot more than what they had expected to and we wouldn’t want that to happen to you too.

Verdict: Amarres is a perfect place for a date, an important business lunch or family lunch on a Sunday.
Price: 70-100 USD should be more than enough for a complete dinner for two with wine
Atmosphere: Healthy family atmosphere, amazing terrace and views
Staff: Friendly, very helpful and good sense of humor
Location: Zaitunay Bay

February 30 Review

Whether it’s the swing-set seat, the half-a-motorcycle stool, the cut-up Sukleen can or maybe even the 20-liter water bottle you choose to sit on, one thing’s for sure: you always have something to look at in February 30.

The attention to detail in making every single centimeter as quirky as possible is honestly very impressive. The walls, furniture, floors, art work, bar, graffiti and other artwork will help your eyes stay busy if your date’s boring or your business meeting is a drag, or your one-too-many drinks have made everything seem a little more interesting and novel.

It’s hard to describe in words really, that’s why I asked for some pro-photos of the place which I’ve attached below. So I’m gonna move on from the decor and talk about the other things at a bar: food, drinks and music.

The food is also a bit weird, with items on the menu that might make you say “Really?”. I’d recommend the mini-burgers. One of them comes with raspberry jam, and I must say, the clash of somewhat opposing flavors is amazing. My friend and editor of Ragmag, Fida, swears on their risotto too, but I’d still go with the burgers =P

I can’t really talk about the drinks there, cause as you all know I’m not a big fan of alcohol, but what I can vouch for are the non-alcoholic ones. I had the vanilla virgin colada, and it was pretty good. Not too much shaved ice, not too thick and creamy either, but just right.

The music is just as ecstatic as the place, with a bit of Arabic classics giving way to some indie rock and maybe even some lounge music. It’s sorta like the playlists you make on your iTunes, songs you love, but not necessarily related to each other or the same genre.

Verdict: Love it, fits perfectly in Hamra and good for a drink, or lunch in the day when it’s less crowded
Price: 10-20 USD should be more than enough for a drink or two.
Atmosphere: Sophisticated, perhaps bordering on the hipster, but the fun, laid back kind of hipster!
Music: Everything
Staff: Friendly, very helpful and good sense of humor
Location: Hamra, the alleyway

Look at the ladies’ expressions before and after, hahahaha! I love newspapers that run these ads.

Djebali Live in Beirut

Don’t you just love good House music? That’s why I’m endorsing and covering “One Night in May” on the 11th. Beirut in the Mix and Retro Clash are getting Djebali straight from France to spin the decks with Ronin & Nesta, the BCE and Phil next Friday May 11th.

Even before going on his soundcloud and looking him up on YouTube, it was a sure endorsement. After all, he plays regularly at Club Rex in France, where Daft Punk began their prolific career, and a club I need to visit before I die.

So, if you’re free next Friday, there are 8 hours of beautiful House music at Art Lounge for 25USD a piece. Check out the Facebook event for more details and a map. See you there hopefully, and till then, have a listen to some Djebali:

Rock Bands Replace DJs in Beirut Festivals?

So, everywhere I go, I hear people moping about how they’re gonna have to spend so much this summer on tickets for Within Temptaion, The Cranberries and RHCP. Rumor has it there are even more big bands coming to perform this year. It looks like a stark contrast between the past decade or so, which was dominated by electronic music DJs from the four corners of the Earth.

But is it really? Beirut’s party crews get a handful of international DJs every other week, with artists from all over the world and all kinds of electronic music performing regularly at Beirut in the Mix, PC, Underrated, We Run Beirut and other party crews’ events. Perhaps there aren’t as many Forum-style events, but then again, the rarity of these massive productions is what makes them all the more special. I’d choose intimate club setting any day over a stadium event.

However, for my dearest EDM fans, despair not. There are already whispers that Trentemoller or Deadmau5 is coming to town, with the more commercial bunch like Swedish House Mafia and Avicii also in the pipeline. I can’t say anymore, cause I am not 100% sure of anything yet, but, this post is just to allay your fears, as it has mine: we’re gonna party good this summer! =D
