My July 12 Facebook Status [Request]

I am not sure why I wrote it, it was spontaneous and rolled off my fingers onto the keyboard very fluidly. I have added one phrase to it before publishing it here. I do this because many of my friends and readers suggested I should, and I agree. I would love nothing more than to see you add to it… I also photo-chopped our new flag. This represents our beloved country much better than the older one.

We live in a country that is in rapid decline. No jobs, no salaries, no electricity, no water, no internet, no phones, no roads, no police, no army, no justice system, no government, no environment and no hope. Even clubbing is no longer what it used to be.

To top it all off, we are losing our liberal principles, the ones we were so proud of. Liquor shops being bombed, movies and books being banned, eggs shoved up into asses and sheikhs and priests tightening instead of loosening their grips on our lives and choices.

There is zero hope for Lebanon and we’re all angry all the time because we know it, and can’t do anything about it. And even if we could, where would we start? Everyone is armed, old tires are everywhere and dirty money is never low in stock. To make matters worse, sectarian extremism has never been more intense, with all sects guilty of making their people blind, stupid and misguided.

Raping women, beheading soldiers, holy wars and beards that haven’t been trimmed in decades. Paris and Switzerland of the Middle-East my ass. This is a cesspool of religiously-driven, angry group of people with memory that spans 24 hours that are in constant turmoil over who gets to be in charge. And when one of them is, the rest will do the unspeakable to get those in power out, only to repeat the same scenario, with the same politician-prostitutes, with the same slogans and the same blessings by old men in robes.

If anyone tells you otherwise, or says “patriotic” phrases that have no ground in reality whatsoever, slap them in the face. There is nothing to look forward to in Lebanon and there are no better days ahead. The elections will not happen, the situation will only get worse. The one thing I am fond of in this place are the few people who are reading this, whom I love and enjoy company with. You folks are awesome, I wish there were more of you out there.

ABANDONED: McMagic Theme Park – Lebanon

I have never been to McMagic when it was still open. I believe it closed down sometime in late 90s, making it at least a decade since it was abandoned. It looks as if the people just stood up and walked out one day, with almost everything still there, from toys and rides to office supplies like staplers and stickers. If you know what happened to that place, please do share.

Till then, here are almost 100 photos taken with my HTC One X a few days ago. Macabre, somber and plain old creepy with the weather that day. Good news is, Yuri and I slid down the slides, climbed the nets and had plenty of fun on the wobbly bridge. Jad however, was being a photographer =P

Feniqia Review

This is a place I like to go to when in Byblos. It’s located literally a stone’s throw away from the Byblos Citadel, the Old Souks and the Old Port, and since the municipality there decided that area is pedestrian, it makes it all the more enjoyable and quiet.

If there is one thing I love about Feniqia, it’s the sublime presentation of everything. Their drinks come in big old pickle jars full of ice. They hang your salad from a hook and chain attached to a pulley on the ceiling. You get a plate of complimentary appetizers with it’s very own mini-saj. The steak comes on a mini-grill complete with small pieces of charcoal keeping it warm as you enjoy your meal. There are a lot of other nice things about the presentation, such as pieces of apple with your steak, wedges, zucchini and corn on the cob, which I think is awesome.

The prices are fair too. You can get a decent steak with loads of sides for just 26,000 LBP (one of the highest prices). If not, 30,000LBP should be enough for a sandwich or platter with a coke. What’s nice about this place is that there isn’t too much hassle, you just show up and sit down. But it’s also perfect for a nice, romantic date, or watching a World Cup quarter final match, which I think is a versatility rare to find in a restaurant.

The one thing I can complain about is the service, which has a lot of room for improvement. The waitresses and waiters often look unhappy and busy and often mix up signals of when to remove your dish for example, versus I’m still halfway through eating this. But, apart from that, I can’t complain.

Verdict: Love it. If you have a date, wanna watch the game or just have an argileh, this place is a good option
Price: 40-60 USD should be enough for you and your date (appetizer, main course and drinks)
Location: Right across the street from the Byblos citadel, souk and port
Atmosphere: Beautiful presentation and sometimes quirky cool decor
Staff: Lots of room for improvement, but not bad

Decks on the Beach on Friday

So, I’ve already filled up your Thursday spot with Thirsty Thursdays. Now it’s time to make plans for Friday. Why? Because I’ve been away most of this summer and need to make up for the lack of clubbing and the lack of proper events in this tiny nation. I mean, come on, enough with the washed-up bands! Get us some real DJ-producers already.

Till then though, we have our own very awesome decknicians and they’ve set up shop on the beach, to be more specific, The Sporting Club Beach. I was there last Saturday and I must confess, I haven’t had this much fun in a long, long time. The place was packed with awesome people, the sets were perfect and a slight breeze made everything cool enough to keep dancing. Last week was my good friend Richie from The BCE along with some foreign talents. This week it’s my dear friends Ronin and Nesta, whose beautiful deep house sets mix with some more light-hearted nudisco to make what I’ sure will be a killer night along with DJ Tiger Woods.

The best part is? Free entrance before 10:00PM. So, Imma definitely be there early and that’s why I’m not giving away anything on here =P. After 10, it’s 20$ with NO drinks, so be careful guys. For me, a person who doesn’t really drink alcohol, this is perfect. For the rest of you guys, I advise you to enjoy the party while sober, or ditch your sobriety before getting to Sporting!

See you all on Friday!

Open Beer for 20,000LBP in Hamra. Nuff Said?

I haven’t endorsed an event in a while, but now that I’m back and back on track, here’s one for all you drinkers who read this blog. Now, you probably won’t see me chugging down beer but for 20K it’s super cheap and the best part is, it’s not a band! (or not only at least). Tim will be spinning, from We Run Beirut and I’m pretty sure the second half of WRB, Tres will join in. Also, for you more primitive music lovers, if you encourage Allan and the guys enough, I’m sure Lazzy Lung will get on stage too. But, perhaps the best part is there event description which I’ve copy-pasted below.

Here’s the Facebook event page and as an extra treat, I’m giving away two tickets to tomorrow’s event. All you gotta do is guess what kind of beer will be served, first to post the correct answer on the blog’s FB page, wins ^^
