This 1.24 meter wide, 2.34 meter long and 1.45 meter high fully electric car is coming to Beirut next month. A few months after the launch of the fully electric Nissan Leaf (which I leaked about, and have since seen on the street), Renault is getting this tiny, super cute car to Lebanon.
It seats one or two people, with one person behind the driver. It comes with full doors, no doors, or a small rail guard. It looks awesome, and I’d much rather be driving something like that instead of a scooter (even though this thing is a car, with a chassis, four wheels, pedals, etc.)
It charges out of a normal power socket, and it needs some 3.5-4 hours to charge. It’s range is anywhere between 60 and 80 kilometers on one charge. Now, this vehicle was made for urban environments, so I’m not sure how it would fare going up our mountains. But then again, “mobilettes” weren’t designed for that and there is an abundance of them everywhere.
It’s gonna sell for 14,000USD, but there’s a catch. The battery which powers it is super expensive, so, instead of buying it from Renault, you’re sorta renting it. Which means you will keep paying a monthly fee, but also, get guaranteed a replacement battery if something happens to yours (which costs several thousand dollars and needs to be specially recycled)
I am personally very excited, but the price seems a bit steep. I can see these Twizys running aound Beirut as delivery boys and couriers shuttle between Ashrafieh, Hamra, Sin El Fil, etc. I can also see it as the buggy or ATV-version vehicle, but for city, which is used to navigate through traffic instead of off-road (and less of an overcompensation for something, since its noiseless and unimposing, versus the ultra loud and flashy alternative vehicles we see in Lebanon).
